Summation:

In the Minor Puppy Dog Class for the SBE 2002, we received four entries, of which three were shown on the day. Gradings of 2 x Very Promising and 1 x Promising were awarded. There was not a depth of quality in this class, so the gaiting section was concluded very quickly.
The winner was very easily so, due to his type, strength and general construction for his age. He was the youngest in this class and carries a sire line with much potential to produce very good representatives of the Breed. If Iccara Wolf Blass Red continues to develop in a similar way to present, he may become a dog of great use to WA and possibly Australia.
Second and third placegetters lacked in sufficient strength, type and potential to press for higher placings on the day, despite being older. The movement derived from the good angulations of “Justa Gigilo” was impressive. Angulations on “Pennys Zoomer” need to be more pronounced to effect better ground covering and stronger movement.
In this class, the dogs being just minors means that they all have a long development period to go through, so I look forward to seeing the progress that they make.

SUMMATION:

I would like to thank the GSDA of WA for the privilege and opportunity to judge the Open Bitch Class at this prestigious event. My sincere thanks also to Margaret Ronald for her marvelous job as stenographer on the day, and her prompt translation of the critiques for my review and adjustment. Congratulations to the members of the SBE committee for the smooth running of the weekend in general. Lastly, to Kevin Knuckey for his very efficient control as Ring Steward.

There were 17 bitches entered in the class with 13 presented on the day. This entry was the highest since 1999, so thank you to the exhibitors for placing your faith in me as a judge.

Size: 12 of the 13 bitches were well above medium size to large with only 1 bitch being medium size.
Type: 2 bitches were critiqued as excellent type and the balance very good type.
Forequarter Angulation: 10 bitches had very good angulation and 3 had good angulation. 5 bitches had restrictions in the length and/or placement of the upper arm.
Hindquarter Angulation: All bitches had very good angulation.
Strength: 10 bitches were strong and 3 medium strong.
Heads: 8 bitches had strong heads, 4 very good heads, and 1 bitch had a good head with restriction of the stop, 2 bitches had slightly infirm ears during movement.
Eye Colour: 9 bitches had very good to dark eye colour, whereas 4 had medium eye colour.
Withers: In stance, 3 bitches presented with a high wither and 10 with a very good wither. 3 bitches showed a loss of wither in movement.
Croup: 3 bitches had good length and lay of the croup, 8 with good lay but restrictions in the length. 2 bitches had slightly steep croups.
Proportions: 12 bitches had very good proportions, with 1 bitch being slightly stretched.
Elbows: 3 bitches had firm elbows, with 10 having slightly loose elbows.
Hocks: 12 bitches had firm hocks and 1 bitch was slightly cow-hocked with loose hocks.
Movement: 7 bitches had powerful, dynamic movement, 6 had very good ground coverage. 1 bitch presented with restrictions in the reach and 1 with restrictions in drive.
Overall Virtues of the Class: Overall the type and proportions of the class were very good, along with strength of body and heads. The hindquarter angulations of the class were all very good. The firmness of hock joints was praiseworthy. In general, the ground-covering movement was excellent to very good. Withers were high to very good. The lay of croup in general was very good.
Areas of Concern: Length of croups, firmness of the elbows, and size. With size, no bitches were oversize but only 1 bitch was medium size. This point needs to be noted in breeding programmes for the future.

Excellent Merit Group:

1st * SAARBACHTAL OLIVIA ET ‘A’Z’ Ex
Linebreeding: Ch *Prima Zorba 2-4,3, Prima T litter 3,5-4,5
This bitch presents as a very good representative of the Quanto v Wienerau line. Particularly praiseworthy with this bitch are her excellent strength, substance, sable pigmentation and very good planes of skull and foreface. In stance, she presents with much harmony and type. In movement presents with vitality and willingness to work. Her litter sister, Oschi, was in 4th place, graded Excellent 1, and her litter brother, Odin in 4th place and graded Very Good, was presented in the Open Dog class. Repeat litter brothers were presented in the Junior Dog class, coming 2nd and 3rd, both graded Very Good Merit. Olivia was 9th Open Bitch at the 2002 National and her brothers were also on the pegs in Junior Dog. This shows the strong family lines of this bitch, with her mother sired by 1994 SBE Sieger Ch Skefmora Maurie out of 1995 Siegerin Ch Tobarenny Leilani. This bitch has had one litter with no progeny presented to date. I am sure she will go on to prove her value to the breed in the future.

This bitch presents with much type and harmony and the very strong motherlines of Lovely Lady and Royal Velvet and the emerging Iccara Chivvies Caddy. Her sireline is a representative of the Iwan/Siegfreud line and the motherline is Thunderbolt/Tumblin Dice. This is the first time this bitcb has been presented in the Open Class, being just over 2 years. She still presented progeny in the Baby Bitch class with 5th place out of 10 babies presented. This puppy was only just 3 months. This has affected the coat condition of this bitch but she still presented a harmonious picture with an excellent sequence of steps.

This bitch is a daughter of the 1997, 1999 and 2000 Sieger Ch Iccara Intrepid and presents with many of his very good attributes, particularly his effortless ground coverage and excellent sequence of steps. Through her sireline she is a representative of Thunderbolt/Tumblin Dice and Iccara Chivvies Caddy and her damline goes back to Lesko Wildsteiger Land and Dorsten Monte Cito. This bitch to date has not had a litter, but with her very strong family lines is bred to produce progeny of great value. I strongly recommend to her owners they consider her future breeding programme and present this bitch in the future with progeny.

This bitch was in first place until the gun test, where she did not present herself sufficiently firm. Withdrawn with the judge’s permission due to foot injury.

SUMMATION:

In the Open Dog Class for the SBE 2002, we received seven entries, of which only six were shown on the day and one of which had to be withdrawn midway through the event, due to a family emergency at the home of the owner. The first and primary loss to the class was due to the tragic and untimely passing, just 5 days ago, of the oldest dog in the class. That dog, Adashad The Fugitive, was but a mere six years of age. Now a different perspective is placed on the conduct and outcome of the event, as this dog was potentially going to play a significant part in the final placings at the front of the class.

The entry for dogs in recent SBEs has been progressively diminishing and comes as no great surprise. In WA we are quite adept at producing good numbers of top bitches, but this is not the case for top dogs that can reproduce the desired attributes in both their male and female progeny. Only one locally bred dog has featured in recent national events, both as an open show dog and sire of high rating offspring. In the last decades there has been a mere handful that has been nationally competitive as show and breed potential.

At last year’s SBE there were 4 Minor Puppy Dogs, 5 Puppy Dogs, 2 Junior Dogs and 1 Intermediate exhibited. Of those 12, only 3 remain that can be competitively shown with potential to further contribute to the breed and one of them is not resident in this State. The compounding problem to breed development is the fact that the bloodlines represented are predominantly bitch producing lines and except in two cases, not recognised as substantial sources of male dogs.

As the Open Dog judge, the theme of my direction for the breed is to focus the breeders of this State on the basics of their breeding over the next twelve months. I envisage this to create a new foundation to build a stronger and more predictable future. This entails pointing out to breeders what principles will work to the breed’s advantage and consequently reflect on that breeder’s kennel in ensuing years.

The simple fact is that in order to successfully contribute to the breed as a breeder, one must be able to produce high quality male dogs as well as high quality bitches. We have seen this in Germany with kennels such as Arminius, Wienerau, Wildsteiger Land, Bad Boll and Kirschental. In Australia, we see this, but to a much lesser extent, in the kennels of Karlrach, Astasia and Iccara. Most recently Demtori has produced a very high proportion of top quality males amongst top bitches in a relatively small breeding programme. Ask yourself “What is the common factor?".

My mission is to challenge your comfort zones, dissipate your prejudices and get you to reassess what is essential! Your knowledge and information about the breed is the basic fundamental. The following story neatly sums up a breeder’s situation :

“Every day a dolphin wakes up and understands it must be smarter and faster than most of the other fish and especially the fastest shark, or it will be eaten. The shark must be more cunning and faster than the slowest fish including the dolphin, or it will starve.”

“The competitive advantage for the dolphin is that it knows it must stay ahead of the pack to survive, and the shark knows it cannot afford not to at least keep pace. Most of the other slow and unthinking fish will become victims of the system.”

The common factor is the sireline of Quanto von der Wienerau. Not that the sirelines from Canto and Mutz will not produce top males, but not to the same extent. The bonus is that top females of the absolutely correct type, strength and sexual characteristics will be also produced, whilst the potential to retain the line will be enhanced significantly.

This is not to say that the motherline is not important. It is equally so, but the advantage is to have the prepotent sireline within the brood bitch to compound use of the Quanto bloodline. Examples of this occur with the line breeding usage of Lasso di Val Sole, the Q litter Arminius, Uran Wildsteiger Land, Palme Wildsteiger Land, etc.

So what male dogs do we have in Australia to promote this fundamental factor? The dogs and bloodlines that fit the criteria, with progeny to support this, are Hammer von der Waterkant, Troy von der Noriswand, Jasso von der Roten Matter and Prima Zorba. Dogs that have potential to support this are Uno von der Urbecke and Ingo vom Frankengold.

As a breeder to a breeder, I must leave you to ask yourself the question “Can I survive with mediocrity or can I rise to the challenge and excel in breeding far above average dogs and bitches?” As judge of this class at the conclusion of judging, I did not have the dog(s) required to set a new and correct course for the breed in this State. As breeders, you all now have this opportunity, given that I have empowered you with the right knowledge.

The progeny of “Kazan” exhibits:

The type of his sire, Triumphs Gucci, and his linebreeding to Cello Romerau (5,5-4) and Odin Tannenmeise (5-4) is evident. The anatomical structure one associates with the Canto Wienerau sireline is also evident. Good sexual characteristics, with medium strong males and strong feminine bitches. Comparatively, breed virtues, attributes and qualities are distributed more strongly towards the bitches than the dogs. Overall is a nice balance of construction and freedom from exaggeration. Size is of above medium to large, with occasional tendency to oversize.

Generally, heads are of very good structure with good planes of the foreface and skull. Coat, colour and pigment are overall good with medium to medium-dark eyes and masking on the head and muzzle could be more pronounced. The use of well pigmented bitch lines is recommended. Size, set and firmness of ears remains a concern. Further breeding to Cello Romerau and other lines known to produce soft ears, needs to be addressed by potential brood bitch owners.

Proportions are very good in the majority of cases. The height to length ratio is generally very good, none being too long or too short. Height to depth ratio in the majority of offspring appears similar to the sire, as with their length of foreleg. Angulations are good to very good generally and typical of the bloodlines, the length of upper arm and croup could still be longer in a number of progeny. Generally, the good lay of shoulder enhances the wither length to complement good and clean toplines. Placement of the withers could be more prominent in both stance and movement.

Movement is very sound and balanced, with very good reach, strong drive, correct sequence of steps, and correctness going and coming with minimal looseness. Characters are firm, lively and of good attitude toward working. Progeny gun tested (1) in the Open Bitch Class was self-assured.

Assessment of the progeny is in a major part based on the “Kazan’s” progeny class at this event and progeny presented, surveyed and bred prior to this event. The group in comparison to last year has made no significant progress in depth or quality. Kazan’s best of few sons standing most in type to himself, Sabaranburg Centre Stage, was placed 4th VG in the Intermediate Dog Class in this show and VG15 at the National. Whereas there are a few outstanding bitches from Kazan, like Eisenland Zilli, which suggests his daughters will be the most likely propagators of his bloodline if used in connection to the Quanto Wienerau sirelines that are available.

Very good hindquarter angulation, with strong broad thighs which could be proportionally more even in length. Moves correct going and coming. Shows dynamic, far-reaching movement retaining a good topline and good overall firmness of ligamentation. On loose lead shows very good retention of the topline with very good reach and powerful drive. Off lead still retains a very good topline with still very good reach and drive and firm overall ligamentation. Presented in top condition. The progeny of “Perfect Crime” exhibited and available across Australia was not sufficient in numbers to draw any firm conclusions :

Assessment of “Perfect Crime’s” potential is partly based on his progeny at this event and the 2002 GSD National, but overall on his anatomical virtues together with his prepotent sire and dam lines. Perfect Crime as yet has not presented a son for evaluation. His daughters include Iccara Urban Madonna, placed 2nd in the Minor Puppy Bitch Class in this show and VP20 at the National. Two other daughters, Lesmario Abracadabara and Amity were VG19 and VG20 respectively in the very strong National Junior Bitch class.

Anatomically, “Perfect Crime” offers robustness, strength, very balanced proportions and very good type. He makes a very good impression through his overall appearance, with very good pigmentation and eye colour. His proportions, balance of angulations and very good movement should provide much value to the Breed in WA.

The Canto type infused with Quanto strength is most noticeable in “Perfect Crime” at this stage. It appears that the strength and robustness of the motherline will be a useful attribute. Altogether this suggests that his daughters will be the most likely perpetuators of his bloodline, if further used in connection to available Quanto Wienerau sirelines.

Moves correct going where the hocks could be slightly firmer, when coming the elbows are slightly loose and the front legs tend to rotate, not remaining in the longitudinal plane of the correct sequence of steps. Gaiting into the lead shows very far-reaching movement with strong drive and firm back. On loose lead shows balance,

When gaiting into the lead this dog utilises all of his anatomical virtues with balanced reach and good drive with good retention of the topline. On loose lead tends to fall slightly on the forehand, which is brought about by the slight shortness of the upper arm and insufficient lay of the shoulder. Gaiting into the lead, this dog uses all of his anatomical virtues with balanced reach and good drive, but the performance is marred by too much uncontrolled enthusiasm. On loose lead both the reach and drive should be more effective and the overall ligamentation firmer. Off-lead still shows good reach and drive and is under total control with a good attitude to his work. Not presented in firm and dry show condition, which precluded consideration for the excellent grading. The overall infirmness and heavy appearance is resultant of development through youth in the same condition.

It would not be fitting if I were not to acknowledge the Open Dog entrant that so tragically was unable to make it to the starting line for his class. I do this as a tribute to a dog that I believe will leave a lasting mark in WA as a top GSD stud. He was at the peak of his maturity. From his own and progeny showing at the recent National Show, a number of prospective matings to quality bitches was destined to be forthcoming.

This is how I would describe “The Fugitive” :
6 years 1 month. 64.5 cm. Well above medium size, strong, very well proportioned dog of the desired type with much balance and harmony of construction. Well pigmented tan sable makings in the saddle configuration. Superbly constructed head that is strong and very expressive with complimentary dark eyes, dark masking and correct ears. Good length of neck. High and long withers, straight and strong back, good croup. Well developed fore and underchest. Ideally, the foreleg could be marginally longer. Correct in front. Very good forequarter, with correct lay of shoulder and very good angulation of the upper arm that could be a fraction longer. Very good hindquarter, derived from correct lay and length of the upper and lower thighs with strong muscular development. Steps correct going and coming, where the elbows could be just slightly firmer. Powerful and very good ground-covering movement achieved from strong drive of the hindquarter, a far-reaching forehand and firm back. The overall firmness of ligamentation and musculature condition is normally praiseworthy.

The progeny of “The Fugitive” exhibits:

The type of the sire and his linebreeding to Prima Zorba (1-3) and Lasso di Val Sole (5-5) is significant. The general anatomical structure one associates with the Quanto vd Wienerau line is very evident. Very good sexual characteristics, with strong robust males and strong feminine bitches. Comparatively, breed virtues, attributes and qualities are equally distributed between the dogs and bitches. Overall is a noticeable harmony of construction and freedom from exaggeration. Size is of medium to above medium, without any tendency to oversize. Heads are of exceptional structure with correct planes of the foreface and skull. Coat, colour and pigment are all excellent with medium-dark to dark eyes and very good masking on the head and muzzle.

Proportions are very good overall. The height to length ratio is generally ideal, none being too long or too short. Height to depth ratio in the majority of offspring appears superior to the sire, as their length of foreleg is noticeably better. Angulations are all very good generally and atypical of the sireline and breeding line combinations, the length of upper arm and croup could be just slightly longer in some cases. Generally, the very good lay of shoulder enhances the wither length, which is necessary in conjunction with a height of wither placement to complete a correct topline. Placement of the wither is very reminiscent of Lasso di Val Sole, both in stance and movement.

Movement is very sound and balanced, with very good reach and strong drive. A feature is the extensive angular support of the upper-arm to the body, a correct sequence of steps, and correctness going and coming with minimal looseness. Characters are firm, lively and of strong disposition toward working. Progeny gun tested (3) in the Open Classes are all completely self-assured.

Given that “The Fugitive” had a limited number of matings with some outstanding results, particularly in cementing the Prima Zorba family type, there is no doubt that this dog would have gained the grading of EXCELLENT MERIT had he been able to be presented on this WA SBE week-end. The fact that he produced this year’s 1st and 4th Open Bitches and 2nd and 3rd Junior Dogs attests to the potential of his bloodline. His sireline and others back to Quanto vd Wienerau is desperately required in the State of WA to complement those of the Canto type influenced by Mutz/Uran/Orkan variations which form our present group of potential sires and bloodlines.

Obedience and Agility Results

WEST COAST CHALLENGE 2001 OBEDIENCE AND AGILITY RESULTS

In the obedience trial, whilst we had no 1st. placing amongst our GSD’s, several earned Excellent medallions for having scores of 190 and over, so congratulations to the following:

In Novice we had Pam Hind with CONNOR (Vonarran Dillinger) 196 pts (just 2 points behind the winner) 2nd. place and his CD title. Jane Schneider with Eisenland Perception ET 191 pts and 3rd. In Novice Competition there was Wayne Martin with JACKSON (Ameliaberg Fames Jackson CD AD ET) scoring 197 pts (just one point behind the winner) and 2nd.place, Rob Crawford with Cherylton Donette with 193 pts. In Utility there was Brian Glover with JACK UD ADM ET, 192 pts, (again just one point behind the winner) and 2nd. place.

Jack also won the prestigious KALGOORLIE TROPHY for being the highest scoring German Shepherd in the Trial. This is the 5th time that Jack has won this trophy and at 10 years of age, can still show the young ‘uns a thing or two!

In Agility we did have some winners, proving once again that the German Shepherd can not only do agility, but is out there in the forefront, showing just how well it can be done.

In Novice, Mel Rhoden and MILLIE (Vonarran Miss Millennium CDX JD) came 2nd and earned an Excellent medallion with 2 clear rounds and her Agility Dog title. In Open Angela Richards and Seigen Brun Berg AD ET qualified, as did Kylie King with ZAC (Delkit Granite CD AD ET, Mark Jovic and COUGAR (Amurhaus Bayard CD ADM ET JD came 3rd and qualified for an Excellent medallion with 2 clear rounds, Kaye Brotherwood and STRYKER (Nasib Bandero) qualified, Ann Glover with KURT (Iljaberg Quest for Truth UD ADX ET also qualified for an Excellent for 2 clear rounds as did Eric Herson with Adashad Pretty Woman CDX ADX ET JD. 1st. place went to Wayne Martin and SHAH (Kshatra Copper Rose  CD ADM ET) In Masters Richard Barville and DELLA (Ameliaberg De Laura CDX ADM ET JDX) came 1st and also gained an Excellent medallion for being 10 seconds under the standard course time. Eric Herson with Adashad Pretty Woman CDX ADM ET JD came 3rd.
